James Sargent's descriptive catalogue of patent magnetic bank and safe lock

Whilst searching for information about the Sargent Magnetic Bank Lock, I stumbled across a descriptive catalogue by James Sargent, from 1870.

I’ve never seen it mentioned here before.

I found it strange there was no mention of the “Automatic” which came out shortly after the “Magnetic”. On checking the date of the publication, it is 1867 not 1870. One of those sideways roller bolt locks can be found in the Mossman Collection. And of course there are several Magnetics and Automatics in the Harry Miller Collection. Doug

As luck would have it I recently opened a Diebold Bahmann safe with one of James Sargents early and rare combination locks. It is shown in the catalog and I would date it from the mid to late 1860’s.

Thank you for sharing those pictures, Doug. I’ve never seen an image of that lock outside of the catalogue.
