Halls safe Co safe

Attached a picture but not sure if it worked
Recently came across a halls Co safe. Believe it’s 29 inches tall and all original
Seller doesn’t have the combo however.

Just wondering if anyone can provide me with any info on them and ballpark what it would be worth.

You have a very nice Hall’s cast iron safe. Does it have the 100 number dial or the 130? When putting pressure on the handle and while turning the dial, does it bind? If so, it has a straight tailpiece lock.
Prices vary drastically from region to region, from a few hundred (or less) on up.

I can’t help with value, but a big factor would be the door. You mention there is no known combination, but the image suggests the door is open? If it’s locked shut with no combo that would really drop the value but if the door is locked open, it’s not a big deal to determine the combination.

My notes suggest Hall’s Safe and Lock started in 1845. In 1896 they merged with two other companies to form Herring-Hall-Marvin. But this safe is Hall’s Safe Company, formed in 1896 by the three Hall brothers formerly associated with Hall’s Safe and Lock. Hall’s Safe Company continued until 1927, so this safe would date from 1896-1927 and maybe somebody else can nail it down better. (Source: American Genius, page 32).

ok… first off this isnt my safe yet, currently trying to buy it but the seller is hesitant if they wanna sell it. want $100 for it.
the door is open, it was in the basement of the house when they moved in and dont have the combo so never closed it for obvious reasons.
from what ive read if it has the plural “Hall’s” name which it does, its dated from 1945-1896 if im correct.

From the info and pics I’ve provided can anyone tell me anything about the safe? If it’s a good find and if it’s a $100 or $1000 safe?

Not sure what info you are looking for about the safe, but I can tell you that it is heavy. Moving it out of a basement is a dangerous job. The safe is in nice shape but given the moving costs, $100 does sound like a fair price.

Just want to confirm if it’s 1945-96 and specially value.
See ones on eBay that look the exact same going for 1000+

Early 1900’s as was previously mentioned. Are they getting $1,000+? I don’t collect, I just work on them.

When looking at prices on eBay it can be useless to look at the starting price. You need to look at the final price on auctions that have completed and were successful.

If you are hoping to make money out of buying and selling second hand safes, take my advice, don’t bother. They are heavy and expensive to move. Very few people will pay any appreciable sum for an old safe. Most business users simply get a new or almost new model which is the cheapest one their insurers will cover. In short the effort involved is virtually never worth what you will be paid.

Now with this one, if you can get it for a very small sum, and you can move it safely to where you want it, and you can establish the combination and the whole thing works, you will have got a lovely possession.

no i dont plan on buying and selling to make income. i want to buy this piece and keep it. i just think its very cool and whether its worth the 100 im paying or 10,000 i still want and love it. i just know most people on here are gonna prolly know more about it than myself and would love to learn something about it and its uniqueness and if its a couple hundred dollar piece or worth 1000+

In that case you have got yourself a very nice piece. Be careful moving it. You can damage the safe, yourself, the building and any vehicle involved unless you are accustomed to, and equipped for moving very heavy items.

Is there anything you can tell me regarding value or why specifically you say that it’s a very nice piece?

I say it’s a nice piece just based on condition and appearance.

On value you need to find somebody with a knowledge of the market in your area. I am not American! In UK a safe of that sort of age, in a basement, would be worth nothing. In fact there is a good chance you would have to pay somebody to remove it.

If you are tempted to try to move it, get some strong men round it. Get it on rollers and use a winch or block and tackle to slide it up the stairs on a heavy plank of wood.
