Help identify my huge old lock

My father got this lock from his uncle, who was sheriff of Humboldt County, Nevada around 1900. Dad told me it is an Oregon Boot lock, but my internet research on Oregon Boots suggests that is unlikely. There are no markings on the lock or key, except for a “27” that is stamped into the shackle and each key. The whole thing weighs 4.0 pounds. The inset shows the removed shackle at reduced size (via photo editing). The key must be inserted and turned to insert or remove the shackle. The bottom, where the key inserts, is a separate steel plate, held in place by swaging-over of the bottom of the main case. (Not sure of my terminology) Any info will be appreciated. If it is appropriate, I would like to donate this to a Nevada museum. I am not interested in selling. Thanks.

The style of lock is called “ SCANDINAVIAN ” If yours has a rectangular key hole in the bottom it is probably made by McWilliams. Arnall’s book gives it a value of around $ 255.00, however that reference book is 12 years old and prices have risen considerably over the last 10 years. Personally I would hold onto it for sentimental reasons, however if you donate it to a museum and it has your dad or uncle’s name on it,all your family will be able to see it and enjoy it. oldbiscuit/Mark: Thanks! Yes, it has a rectangular keyhole. Can you tell me the use of a lock like this? I.e., what were they locking up? Perhaps cells?

It’s possible it could have been used as a cell door lock, but in all reality It was probably purchased to use as a higher security lock for a store room or warehouse building.These locks are from the late 1800’s to the early 1900″s and in their day were considered to be a high security padlock . Locks like these were used on cell doors, but most cell doors had actual built in locks.Either way I think it would be pretty hard to trace it back to a specific jail that your uncle was a sheriff at unless someone has a picture of a cell door with a padlock on it from that jail.
