Diebold Vault lock identification, looking for parts

Hi All -

I’m trying to restore the pictured vault door to working condition. Hoping for some advice on identifying the lock, and also on parts sources. Diebold is faintly visible through the (yuck) paint. There is no name or serial number on the dial. The bolt handle has a 6 digit serial number but no name. The lock body does not have any identification, and measures 4-½ by 3-¼ by 2 inches. It appears that the bolt was 1-¼ inch tall. Four wheels. From my limited knowledge, I think I’m missing the fence, bolt, and cover. Might I be further ahead by swapping out the entire lock assembly?

Are you wanting to do a historically accurate restoration job, or are you just wanting to get it working?

If the latter then you would certainly be a lot better simply sourcing a new lock and fitting it along with new bolt throwing handle. You can fit the new lock through the existing hole and just alter the boltwork as necessary.

It is only a light door but if I were doing it I would add an aed at the same time. It can be a simple deadfall on a vault door for reasons which are obvious.

For now I just want it functional again. If I end up swapping locks out I’ll box up all the old parts and put them on an upper shelf in the vault. What do I need to be mindful of when looking for a lock assembly to retrofit? What measurements or specs are most important? Also, could you point me to some parts sources?

Sorry, I don’t know the language. In my world, an AED is a defibrillator; please advise.

That’s a Diebold “Eagle” cast iron lock and they are fairly common as it was the standard lock used in their fire safes. You have to watch as they were available in 3 and 4 wheel models. I think I know of one that would be for sale. If not I do have a solid bronze one I would sell. Doug

Doug, I see your “Eagle” is in quotations. I’ve seen this lock in many Diebold safes but have not been able to locate any documentation on it. Many people discribe it as the Diebold Eagle 161, I’m not so sure.

Do you have any catalog info on this lock? I have not been able to find any.

All I have is newer Diebold stuff, but Eagle models 131, 151, 161, 164, and 174 LH and RH are mentioned in the change key section. Naming of the locks “Peerless” and “Eagle” goes way back and possibly to when Diebold Kienzle first offered them in the early 1870’s, although those were originally the roller bolt models. Doug

Of course an exact replacement is the best from all points of view. I hope it fits.

We’ll see if an exact replacement surfaces, otherwise will retrofit a newer lock.
