just had a quick look on the net at current stuff and lots have changed from the traditional grill pattern we’re used to. If it was me I’d stick with it though, as you can make the construction as light or heavy as you want for your purpose, and it’s a pretty quick way of making a very sturdy gate structure.
unless you want to work entirely from drawings I’d start with the outermost part first, the frame, and once that’s done you’ve got your set aperture and dimensions for the gate itself.
For the gate, I’d go with 4 heavy horizontal strips: one top, one bottom, and the centre 2 can be vertically spaced apart to allow for your two locks, one above the other. ‘Gang’ drill the cut strips stacked on top of each other and clamped, and that way every hole is equally spaced for the vertical bars.
You could make it as heavy as you like, half inch thick steel strip by an inch and a half or two inches wide or whatever, likewise with the vertical bars. Half inch round bars probably enough but you can size it all to be in proportion. Use three quarter inch or inch round if you’re going really heavy! You could add vertical strips to each side, welding them to the four horizontals, this would make an exceptionally rigid rectangle of the outer structure as on typical old Chubb gates etc, and would also make provision for simple hinge-end bolts, which will then allow for simpler hinges- might be worth considering as the hinges might prove the fiddly bit. If you fit simple hinge bolts which just pivot into holes in the frame as the door closes, you can really simplify the hinges themselves and make them strong enough for the job but easier to fit, without having to worry about them being attacked or removed.
You’d need to leave gaps in the strip down the locking edge for your locks to go in, and thick plates can then be cut and welded over each side of the two horizontal centre ‘rails’ to form the lock cavities. These would only need to cover the area of the locks unless you want it to look like a solid centre rail and don’t mind how much steel stock you use!
I’m guessing you’re not planning anything too heavy though, going by your choice of locks. Both are great locks, but intended for lighter duty than an SRD gate. 3G110 obviously better suited than the 114, but even the 110 is going to be a bit flimsy compared to even a relatively light grill gate once it’s all welded. If anyone gives the gate a serious booting the bolt will probably bend out the case, so Bramah MD17 or 27 springs to mind. Expensive but worth every penny, the bolts are massive, they’ll put up with far more sideways and end ways force, and they’re hardened all over.
Itll be be a fun project as you can make it as basic or as complicated as you want. PS I’d go with fixed, non-adjustable hinges for simplicity and allow for any height difference in the receiver cut-outs on the frame. Make bushings for the hinges though, preferably bronze but brass ok and better than bare steel pivoting in bare steel.
