California state treasury, Sacramento: Mosler Magna?

The following image shows up on the web site of the California State Treasurer’s web site (http://www.treasurer.ca.gov/ and wait for it to cycle into view).

I’m not sure what to make of this. It almost looks fictional, certainly a grand departure from anything else. It looks like a Mosler Magna in that the controls are on the door frame. There seem to be no locking bolts on the hinge side but perhaps the ridges interlock. It’s hard to be sure, but the frame may contain the locking mechanism on the right side along with the controls. I expect the door is hydraulically opened and closed, and that’s its keyswitch is between the two dials.

Mosler Magnas seem to be a rare commodity. If this is one, it’s the first I’ve seen.

Any comments from the experts?

Wow ! How futuristic looking. Bit Lego looking and lacks the appeal of the huuuge round vault doors for me but no doubt very capable at keeping things secure.

I’ve seen that ridged pattern and that type of finish before- but it was on a George Foreman Lean Grilling Machine. Don’t know what on Earth they were thinking with that door, but it’s certainly different..

I was a little concerned that they spent so much money on the vault and door that they might not have any money left to put into the vault. But then I decided they’d just raise taxes and fill it up anyway.

The LH hinged door you posted looks to be the emergency, as the site’s facebook page has this image of the main door that’s RH hinged.

Not my cup of tea at all compared to say, some of the Kumahira’s- I think they nailed it with their blend of modern on some of the huge circular doors they make, but then it’s the old saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder..

Good call on the emergency door versus the main door. I thought the first image looked odd, the door seemed to be sort of hanging above the floor which of course is the case for emergency doors.

They are actually part of the frame and its mechanism. Instead of many individual bolts there are just a few full-length bars. Here is the description from the Magna brochure (which at the moment is too large to upload) –

“When closed a solid full-length locking bar slides into a groove on the locking side, a functional sill-locking bar rises up out of the floor to secure the bottom of the door, and the structure of the door seats into a recess on the hinge side. The movable locking bars are so located as to be protected by the entire thickness of the door and frame. It would require an almost unimaginable force to shear these massive locking bars.”

If you’re familiar with Diebold’s Rotarybolt doors, the ideas are similar.

I think the Diebold name is actually Rotary Wedge and/or Rotary Wedge-lock. Here is a surprisingly crude drawing from a Diebold brochure (http://www2.diebold.com/ficcdsvdoc/TechPubs/books/TP-799554-001/TP-799554-001_fram.htm). Note in this case the locking bar is part of the door, not the frame as in the Mosler Magna. Also notice the shape of the door on the hinge side as well as the frame, they both have a “zig-zag” that overlap when closed, eliminating the need for any locking mechanism on that side. This is a vertical view, looking down (or up!).

I believe that door was called the Wedgelock. The Rotary Wedgelock is a different and later door. Doug

The Diebold web site currently shows the Wedge-Lock door and describes it as featuring “a rotary wedge that spans the full height of the door” (http://www.diebold.com/products/barrier-solutions.html#vault-systems).

Bingo, as they say.

The Sacramento treasury door looks like that 1962 patent, assigned to Diebold. So it’s safe to assume the door is in fact a Diebold Wedgelock, and not a Mosler Magna. Correct?

Both different doors are sometimes referred to as the Wedgelock. The Diebold “Wedgelock” came before the Diebold “Rotary Wedgelock”. The Wedgelock utilizes a sliding wedge and the Rotary Wedgelock utilizes a rotating wedge. I have both type of doors under PM service contracts.

Diebold’s model names are confusing, The Diebold Basic refers to 3 different types doors that I know of, not to be confused with the Advanced Basic. Diebold Pacesetter not to be confused with the Pacemaker, etc.

Similar are Mosler’s bank vault doors.. The Mosler Magna not to be confused with the American Magna. Mosler Century not to be confused with the American Century. Also the Mosler American not to be confused with the previous 4 mentioned doors.
