Happy New Year everyone, hope you all had a great Xmas . . .

haven’t been here in a while -

recently came across an “S-cientest” Safe-Cabinet s/n 36236 with a Yale 3 wheel combo. Only paid $100 which I didn’t think was to bad, especially since I do want to use this to keep chemicals, paints and such out of the reach of little fingers.

it was locked in the open position, so I had to take the wheel out and check out the number settings since the seller had no clue what the combination was to the dial.

They wanted $250 but without the combination they came down.

Dimensions = 24″d x 29″w x 52″

If I’m reading the combo correct wheel #1 = 55, #2= 10 & #3 = 25
they are laid out in the photo with #3 at the left, #2 middle & #1 right

Slight correction - 4 wheel combo, not sure where my mind was (?)
#1 = 25, #2 = 10, #3 = 55, #4 = 05 - - - waalaa, it’s works ! ! !

One problem however, someone had tinkered with this previously.
When I opened the back of the dial case I noticed that the spline key head had been twisted almost off; and, as soon as I grabbed ahold of it with my needle-nose pliers to remove it - you guessed it, off it came.

Now, the dilemma and question(?). How do I go about getting it out?

not as yet, I’ll try and get down to my shop later today and get a photo as best I can of what’s left and post it…

What I really like about this safe a that the shelves are totally adjustable, and that even though the safe weight is about 800#'s it can be easily moved for cleaning/painting, etc.

the lock itself is either a yale OC-5 or yale 0402, depending on the dial center to handle center measurements.
i once had a double door safe cabinet with the same problem. i used a very sharp awl and gently tapped its point into the edge of what remained of the spline key and carefully worked it up, spraying WD40 on it for lube. it eventually came after about 20 minutes of prodding.

yes, the measurement would be from the front of the safe. your 3-¾″ measurement indicates a yale 0402.

I'll have to give your tip a try... ?? if I can get the key out, any idea if a replacement key might be available; and if so, where...??

from your photo it appears the key broke off further down than the one i experienced. if the sharp awl doesn’t work and if you are patient, another way would be to drill with a small bit and use a small easy-out to pull it . when you get it out,and i know you will, i will check my safe lock junk box for a spline key. not specifically from/for your yale but just a spline key you could file down, etc. to work.
