Thanks for letting me join your forums. My name is Justin and I am a second generation business owner in Kansas City. My first facility was previously a bank around the turn of the 20th century and has been renovated to suit our business needs. It has a walk in vault and inside of the vault it has another safe. I believe this to be a cannonball safe but through my own minor investigating I have been unable to find information on any other safes that are similar in size. I inquired about this safe to a collector in Florida once a few years ago but the man was more interested in pressuring me to sell it than to give me information on it. I am not willing to sell at this time but would like to know a rough estimate of value just for my own knoweledge. I dont think I could ever get it out to sell it anyway as it is inside of a vault with a much smaller opening than the safe. My safe dimensions are this. 65 inches tall, 45 inches wide, and 35 inches deep to the outside of the door. The interior opening is 25inches in diameter and the safe is larger on the inside than the opening. Its on casters but is unmovable. We tried with four men 🙂 I will attach one picture for now because I have no way to resize them as I have no computer access at the moment. I have more to post but will wait for an admins approval before doing so. Please let me know what kind of information you want to know and I will do my best to get that for you. The only information I can see is on the timepieceon the interior of the door. It says York and Towne patent 1892. Its very beautiful. Thank you for your time and I will post more pics as soon as someone gives me the go ahead, I just didnt want to make my first post filled with oversize images and such.

It s a cannonball safe and the name on the time lock inside would be Yale & Towne. There never was a York & Towne. That doesn’t mean the safe is Yale & Towne, just that the time lock is.

[SUP]I am going to guess that in the last 100 years or so that safe was painted over. Under the outer layer of paint is the older paint with the information that should tell you who made that. Also we do have safe techs come on here every so often and they might know… it might take time.[/SUP]

I consider your cannon ball safe post HRE (Hibbard Rodman Ely). The lock design is one of three that post HRE balls used. I’d be curious as to which comb lock number you have. The number is stamped on the face of the wheel pack.

The Hibbard Rodman Ely Safe Company existed from about 1899 to 1903. The name was changed to the Manganese Steel Safe Company in 1903, and they went out of business in 1909.
