Model number of older S&G safe/vault lock?

Hello,

I managed to get this one off of ebay. The seller said it came from an old school vault. Did the change key on normal safe locks change at the same time as the vault locks? I think it is from the mid 1940s-50s.

Would anybody have a model number for it? Is my assumption on the date in the right area? I have a 6500 series vault lock that is a bit older and the construction is very similar, this one is not direct drive and a bit smaller in size but both are 4 wheel locks.

Here are some pictures. On the back of the lever it has 36-311 on it. The 36 is hand stamped (and matches the other lock parts) but the -311 is cast into the part. There also appears to be a sideways P or maybe a d that is cast just after the 36. I also took a few pictures next to the older vault lock for size reference.

If anybody wants better photos please let me know.

The tapered “perspective view” S&G logo shown in the first image was trademarked in 1925 and I believe was used into the 1950s (a newer logo was trademarked with a first-use date of 1952). That doesn’t narrow it down by much but it’s a start.

Here is a page from a 1927 catalog. The model number of your lock is probably 6550 (direct drive, square-end bolt) while the catalog image is a 6555.

Thank you very much. I had no idea it was a 6500 series as well. I thought only the bigger locks were 6500s. I really need to find a copy of that catalog. I have a few pages of info on the older Yale/Mosler locks but nothing on older S&G.

The other one I had in the comparison photos was a 6537.

I don’t remember where I got my copy (which is a set of 91 .jpg images) but it was probably via Doug MacQueen or Adrian Weber. At 13 MB it would be easy to .zip it and email it to you if you’d like.

Sargent & Greenleaf has recycled a few model numbers over the years. In this case they seem to have kept the 6500 series for vault locks even though they were completely redesigned.

The 6630 used to be an 8400-type lock (hand change) but the 6630 is now similar to the 6700 series with improvements (false gates, eccentric roller).

The 6800 series, in the 1927 catalog, was a series of fire-proof key-change combination locks but that series is now used for the Key-Op locks.

There are probably other examples.

you are right wylk, 6800 series is now use for the key locks, but I don’t think that he got it straight.
The smaller S&G lock is 6805. For what I understand he thinks is a 6500 series lock and as for the big lock,
he is right;6537! Sorry if I am wrong.

The 1927 catalog No.21 is a must for every one in this trade and as a collector, but I wonder if anyone out their
has any catalog from No.1 through No.20. I wish one of our contributors like Doug Macqueen and others like to say
that they have something!

The 6505 (6500-6507 models as well) are all burglar proof models with the fancy piece over the lever and drive cam. The smaller one does not and matches sizes with the 6550 series in the catalog.
