Diebold help, please.

Hello everyone,
I’m new here and also a novice when it comes to safes. An old friend of mine left me his Diebold safe upon his death. I have known this safe for the past 35 years but, really know little about it. (I will try and post some pictures). I had to help my friend with the main door combination system a couple of years ago. So, I have a little understanding of how it works.
However, the inner, smaller vault (I think they call it the TNT proof safe) doesn’t have the tumbler system. In my searches for a replacement lock I have seen some on E-bay but their dimensions don’t fit my door. I’ve heard that my safe might be a “Diebold Peerless”. Which means nothing to me.
Can someone here give me some help?

Diebold used the word “Peerless” to describe some of their locks; I’m not aware of them using it to describe their safes but I could be wrong.

In the second image of your original post it appears that the entire lock is missing except for the dial spindle. Was this on the main door or the inner door?

The missing lock is from the inner door. The main door lock was a pile of pieces lying inside the safe. It took me all day to figure out how the pieces fit and to figure out what the combination was.

From time to time I see a lock on E-bay but the dimensions don’t fit my inner door. Seems there is a difference in the sizes Diebold built. At least, that’s my guess. I’m just wondering how many differences there might be and how hard will it be to find the right one?

Back in “ancient times” there were simply no standards and each manufacturer did their own sizes, more than one size per maker. Eventually a standard size was adopted for safe locks (Sargent and Greenleaf calls it the “magic module” footprint) and they are now nearly identical but some differences remain in terms of bolt throw, and whether the bolt withdraws flush with the case or not. A fairly standard size for vault locks was adopted as well.

If you post the dimensions of the missing lock there is a chance somebody here on antique-locks might have what you need. No guarantee of course!

I don’t have the old lock to get exact dimensions but, from what I can figure the lock case needs to be:
4 ½″ W. X 3 5/16″ H. X 1 ⅝″ D. The bolt pattern (3 bolts) is: 3 ½″ X 2 ¼″. The pin (bolt) throw would be something around 1 ⅝″ (I’m guessing more like 1 ½″).

VicZar, Good looking lock but I don’t think it will work for my safe. The locking arm (for lack of a better word) would have to slide out of the way like the main door lock and not swing. I’ve attached a pic of the lock’s cavity.

i believe the outer door lock would be a peerless (direct drive)with 4 2.5″diam wheels. driver in back.
the missing inner door lock, in my opinion, would have been a peerless indirect drive.

Yea, that’s what I’m guessing about the inner door lock. It must be an indirect drive but, I haven’t seen any so I’m just guessing. Maybe someone might have a picture of one so I might know what to look for.

your 3rd photo shows a dial only. is this the outer door dial? if so ,is the inner door lock dial removable and have a patent date of may 23, 1871? how many numbers on the inner dial?

That is the inner door lock dial. It has 100 numbers.

I was trying to post a picture earlier but no luck. I found the same layout of your safe and maybe this will help you with other safetech to better
identify your missing lock. I see two arrows on both sides of the dial and I came across: EAGLE DIEBOLD LOCK. I am not a saying that the particular
is it, but the dial ring layout is a match.

Sure does look right. I’ll do some searching for an Eagle Diebold Lock and see if I can find some pictures of inside and out.

Do you see the dial? remember what I told you about the arrows? Look at your safe dial and compare what you see.

The mechanism looks right as does the size dimensions. I’ll have to double check but it seems right. As for the offset drive, I checked the ratio between the drive spine and the dial. It is 1:1 so that shouldn’t be an issue if the spine shaft is the correct length. But, I will have to recheck the rotation direction of the spine shaft compared to the dial movement. You brought up a good point.
I’m always impressed with the detail in engineering and art work that went into these safes.
