Demo Vault door from Wertheim Wien

Hi everybody,

2005 I visited the Wertheim company in Wien.
They have a working small demo vault door, which is worth sharing with you guys.

I’ve often wondered how many factory vault demos are out there- I know of a similar one that Chubb apprentices made at Wolverhampton, but dread to think where it may have ended up. I’ve seen a nice heavy rectangular door which is displayed next to the real door in Japan, and a few very old antique samples and that’s about it.

The small locks on the door are not working, but here some pictures of the original “Arnheim Radial” lock.

Here some pictures of a vault door with these locks made by S.J.Arnheim.
The lock is attached on the back to the blocking mechanism (T-handle), which can be operated, when the keys are in the locks.
After operating the blocking mechanism, the boltwork can be moved with the round handle.

That’s a very impressive lock Oli and one I haven’t seen before- very nice.

The only picture I have of the demo door in Japan is from a Travel Agency Facebook page. Oddly, the Bank of Japan has a good website with pictures and info of the full size door, but no mention or photos of the demo model that I could see. I’ll try and add a link to the Travel page here- go down until you get to Bank of Japan on the right, and if it doesn’t work its Saizen Tours on Facebook.

The Bank of Japan door is impressive, here’s the image:

Their web site includes a virtual tour: http://www.boj.or.jp/en/z/tour/b/kyukan/kinko.htm from which it can be seen to be a side-control York door, built in 1932. The vault is no longer in use and appears to be part of tours of the historic building.

Hey Oli,

nice to see that you visited Wertheim, they invited me some time ago but I had no chance to go there yet. Did you speak to Frau Lunzer? At least I believe that was her name.

I believe the Arnheim Radial lock is one of the few locks that can not by manipulated due to the working principle of the mechanism. I may be wrong on this though.

Another example of demo doors, here is a miniature Mosler vault that belongs to Bruce Mosler. His father, John, was the last president of the company before it was sold to American Standard. That’s a beauty- remember seeing it a few years ago and then it stopped showing up in searches and seemed to disappear off the net- the internal lighting really adds to the effect. Condition is amazing too- looks more loved and looked after than the Wertheim door!
