Safe Identity?

I wonder whether anyone here can help me identify this safe? There doesn’t seem to be any manufacturers plate attached. I don’t have a key and would like to bring this old safe back into use. Can anyone tell me what sort of lock it is likely to have? A local locksmith has suggested drilling the lock to open it but I wonder if there’s another way forward, without causing damage to the safe… Thanks…. :-)

That’s always going to be an issue, as you are in Cornwall - however he is closer than a lot of people, and he travels all over the country so its possible that sooner or later he might well be going somewhere near to you.

The curtain lock picking that you see on Utube is different from that which is required here. This is because the curtain in those locks throw the bolt, in the Tann lock it does not. plus the anti pick system is different. You will have to make a tool.

Ah, thanks for that. I was looking at utube videos of pick making but without knowing exactly what is inside the lock and how it’s constructed I won’t know what shape/size of pick will best suit. It’s difficult to see exactly whats going on in the pictures. Are these Tann locks available to buy anywhere? If I had one to practice on first the job will be a lot easier!

I’ve been removing the old paint so I can repaint it. The original colour seems to be black, and there is a red/orange rectangle painted on the door. There are also some filled holes, the ones each side of the keyhole are probably from where a cover plate was attached, the ones at the top of the door were probably a nameplate, but does anyone know what the two to the left of the door handle would’ve been?

They’re where the brass door pull was originally fitted- a cast brass ‘D’ type handle for opening and closing the door instead of pulling on the boltwork handle
