I’ve always been fascinated by safes; not sure why but I see I’m not alone. I do not have one YET but, I have a contact who is offering me two “J&J Taylor Limited Toronto Safe Works” if I remove them from his property. Both safes are what I would describe as floor models, roughly 45” tall and30”X40” square (ish). Both are open,one has a round door is just an empty square vault inside. The the other has double doors with another set of double doors behind the main ones, some shelving and a secondary smaller safe inside. (the smaller safe insideis missing the lock.) Neither are in particulary great cosmetic condition but have been stored in an upper level of a building away from moisture – so no rust. Paint is another story. Lettering is visible but faded and the main / overall colour has other paint splashes, spills etc on it.
My real question is about how to identify the safes / date of manufacture / where to find identifiers etc. I’ve looked all around them and don’t see anything obvious. There are no painted numbers, no stamped numbers on the exterior, no tags or plaques. I can’t get behind them since they weigh too much move without assistance and have their backs to the wall.
Lastly, does anyone have a link to figuring out the combinations for locks that are exposed and can be accessed from both sides? I can see the lock mechanism but I also know that different locks can have different methods for spinning L-R or beginning by making 3-4 complete turns etc. The mechanism on one has 6710stamped all over the metal not sure if that is something that should mean something to me or not.
Again, I’m new to all of this so please bear with me if I’m asking dumb questions.
