Acme Safe

Hello all,

I’m new to safes and have an opportunity for this safe. A friend has it in his home and I don’t know much about what I’m looking at other than its an acme safe with York combinations. Any information would be helpful. Is it hard to change the combination? Is it an expensive safe? Is it a particular age? Any idea on weight? Thanks in advance!

Looks like being in a well condition especially with that fully intact inner compartment.
I am sure one of the American/US collectors will be able you help you out!

I will take a guess and say around 1900-1930 not sure though I am not that familiar with the American safes, more with the European ones.

I will bet that Doug will know more but at first glance it looks like a York brand TL rate type of safe on the inside and the outside is a light fire safe.

Yes , if you do a search on here for York 400 line money chest posted not all that long ago, you will see more of the inner chest. The fire safe is a standard York made for many years, but the chest would probably date it to the 1920’s or thereabouts. Acme was a big New York dealer but I think they are gone now. Changing the combinations is not difficult for someone experienced, as is estimating the weight, which should be done by the professional mover who should move it. As to its value, it is a great safe with superior burglary protection combined with reasonable fire protection, if you have the need for such an item. In today’s market, the trend is to buy cheap little boxes and call them burglary protection. LOL Doug

Thanks for all the help, its good to get some more information regarding this safe. I have always been an antique safe admirer however have never had an opportunity until now. Is this set up of the Chest safe inside the Fire proof safe common? Is it a easy task to separate the two if I decide to do so?

Along with this opportunity comes the need to move and change the combination of this safe. Can anyone tell me what the going rate is for moving and combination services in NY? Also is the door easy to remove on the fire proof safe. If anyone has a manual for either safe it would be helpful.

I would not recomend removing the chest. Its a very nice combo. I love the 400 line chests, so if you do, i want it! I removed a chest from a large double door fire safe a few moths ago. I would normally not do this, but the big safe was sold, and the buyer was going to scrap the chest, so i rescued it for free! They are a real SOB to remove. I had to try for 2 days. It requires a lot of work with a large pry bar. mine was bolted 2 times on the top, twice through the side, and 2 more times through the back. I sawzall made quick work of that🙁grin): It was just hard to find the bolts, and then get enough of them exposed to cut them away. We kept finding more bolts! they were not meant to be removed, lets put it that way!
