Trying to date these 2 timelocks

The Sargent has a serial # of 1823 & the Yale is #52022.

Certainly no expert on dating timelocks but I’d guess the Yale is from the 1920’s. I looked through my info on S&G and was unable to find any movements that exactly matched yours. Yours has a straight indicator arm instead of the normal curved one to allow for attaching something to the movement. Do you remember what was attached to the open screw hole? Doug

Hi Ron,

I do not have the serial number dating from the these firms. The Yale is a very high number so it is probably post 1940. Each firm numbered their different movement styles separately. So you’d need to know if the Yale is style T, L, or M, for Sargent H, M, or R. These apply only to the interchangeable movements, not the early ones like on S&G Model 2, 3, and 4 and Yale’s Model 1 double Pin Dial and Single Pin Dial.

Too bad Mark couldn’t help further. Both movements appear to be the mid size models, Yale “L” and S&G “B”. As far as I know that Yale was the last of the fancy movements prior to them being Swiss made, which definitely occurred post WWII. Comparative to the Twenties, not very many banks were built or renovated from 1930 to 1945 so there is not a big jump in movement numbers between these dates. Regarding the S&G, I’d say it was quite bit older, maybe turn of the century. Doug
