York 400 Line Money Chest

Hello all. I stumbled apon a scan of an ad for a York round door money chest. The ad says- "York 400 Line/ Burglary Resistive chests/ portable hold-up partitions/ and 500 line wall chests.
Anybody have any other info? What theyre worth? Pictures? Ive never seen one, and would love to see one, and know more about it. Any for sale you know of? Thanks

Here you go Jack. Don’t see these very often at all but they are very good burglary chests. Probably started making these back in the 1920’s-30’s to replace the cannonballs that got phased out. Doug

Sorry about the delay, busy week. These are the photos of the York that I have. It was found with two others bolted side by side. Sorry to say the other two were sent to the scrap yard years ago. I kept this one for a sample. If you look closely it has two relockers on the top (and two more on the bottom that you can’t see). It has one active locking bolt on the opening edge. The body is sand cast steel, and the door fits incredibly tight. Nice old safe, now I have to get it out and clean it up…thanks for reminding me of this one.

thats a pretty neat chest. would you part with it? it would look good inside my TL30 as a watch safe. that also looks like an interesting chest underneath the york. could you put up some pictures and info on that one? thanks again. its very cool

Hi Jack,
Thanks for the offer, however these little gems are destined for my residence. I am an avid collector of such things, and it would break my heart to sell off any of my collection. That said, I’ll keep you in mind if I do want to let that one go. I’ll grab some photos of the bottom chest and post those as well. You can tell by the dust that these have not seen the light of day for sometime.

Hey Yankee, i hate to be a bother but did you get any pictures of the other chest?

Well here are some photos of the larger money chest. Not a beauty to look at yet, but it would keep the bad guys out for a little while. This one has the geared offset spindle, with removable dial. Sorry about the dust and dirt, they have been sitting in the back of the heap for a few years. This one came out of an old Hall’s double door safe.

It looks like the pressure bar attachment on the left is broken?

Nope, the pressure bar tab is just covering the slot that it goes into. On this one, the pressure bar handle is raised up to engage. You may have also noticed that the locking bolt is missing from the lock body…I removed it and placed it inside the safe body, just so I didn’t lock it closed by error.
