Hello guys,
I just bought an antique coin box on Ebay and I was a bit upset when I saw that the side walls and also the back wall is just a metal sheet. The seller claims those would exist and not all were all cast iron. I have a German book called “Die Kultur der Sparsamkeit” in which it is described that those were cast iron. I am not sure if there were really versions with sheet metal on the sides and the back or if the side walls and the back wall just got replaced by that sheet metal after the originals went missing or were broken.
The seller offered to refund me and take the safe back. Since I am in Germany and a friend brought the safe to me that would be a bit difficult and also I like it and want to keep it anyway. I am taking apart the door at the moment will restore the small lock soon.
I contacted the seller with this message:
Dear Antelope,
I just received the “Vintage” Cast Iron Coin Deposit Combo Safe. The item was not as described though. The Coin Box is not in it’s original “Vintage” state. The side walls and also the back walls on those Coin Safes are made out of cast material too. I collect old coin boxes as well as old locks and padlocks. I also have written proof to that claim. The original cast walls were replaced by a bend metal plate which is not the original and “Vintage” state of the Coin Safe.
You did not mention it in your description neither was it shown on the pictures but the item was described as being in it’s “Vintage” state.
I would like to keep the safe because I already have it here in Germany now but I would also like to get a refund for not describing the article as it is.
I hope we can come to an agreement.
Sincerely yours,
Adrian Weber
And here his answer:
Adrian: I’m sorry you’re not satisfied with the safe. We sell these all the time, and while some are made entirely of cast iron, there are many which use the lighter material on the side panels.Since you’re a collector, I’m surprised you’ve not seen these kind before.
In any case, We’ll be happy to take back the safe, as we can easily resell it, and we’ll issue you a full refund, $47.50.
Sorry again for the confusion. JIM>
