A Dropped Door at Coney Island

I found an article from 2010 about what’s left of Coney Island and it included a few images of the Bank of Coney Island including a sad view of a vault door that has been lifted off its hinges and dropped on the floor.

I have a hard time imagining what it took to lift that door. And if they simply dropped it, what damage it could have done (e.g. crash through the floor to a lower floor, if any).

Looking more closely at the second picture, you can see the ends of the pressure bars are buried in the floor. Combined with the fact that the door seems flush with the floor, it looks to me like it was dropped rather than gently placed. And I didn’t initially realize that this photo shows both the door frame and the door:

It’s a sad thing to see such an engineered vault door just lying in the dust like that. As for the pictures of the actual bank inside (from the link) it is not only sad but I would say criminal to let such a beautiful building dissapear for ever. As with locks, keys and other historic things, once they have gone, they have gone.
