Help identify this bankers pressure safe

OK guys, here’s the thing, a customer of ours had me open this safe last week. I instantly fell in love with the workmanship, and the customer offered it to me. I haven’t been able to find any hint of who made it. The lock is a Yale 29 ½, clearly original to the safe. There are no other marks on the safe, however, looking at the door photo I can see that it was repainted long ago. No names, just the original gold pin striping. The safe is, and has been in Boston, MA for the past 75 years.
Any hints or patents would be of great help.

Thanks, I look forward to restoring this unit. I’m currently arranging the purchase and removal from the customers residence. I’m hoping someone will suggest the possible maker, as I have searched everything I have, to no avail.

My best guess is either a very late Herring Farrel Sherman or more likely a Remington Sherman based on the Yale 029-½ lock. Check out Farrel and Weimar’s 1870 101,245 patent for a hinge design for a bankers chest. The T handle is typical of that seen used by Herring but the Herring door hinge blocks were not just a plain rectangular shaped block. Doug

Thanks Doug, I value your opinion on this. I agree that this looks like a Remington Sherman. I just wish that I could find a photo, or patent on one like this. I haven’t given up hope, I’m sure at some point there will be a sighting of a sister safe out there.

There is one on Clearstar just like this jewelers chest. Although Remington Sherman has been mentioned the handle doesn’t match as good as this marvin T handle.

There you go. Not having seen any late, or early Marvin chests that I know of, for that matter , other than the Marvin cannonball, I could only assume. Having been banned from Clearstar (public forum) for suggesting that there were people charging customers for their training, I am not aware of what goes on there. What else can you share? Are you sure it actually made it into production?1870’s was a very busy time for safe and lock manufacturers.

It was assigned to Herring Farrel Sherman so there is a pretty good chance it was made , if only for a short period. It would be quite a find. Doug

The only reason it might not have made it in to production is it not in any of the big lock collections like harry c millers, tommy minnicks, or the Mossman collection. but I did e-mail a lock collector here in the US.

Yes, you won’t find it in any of those collections, as this is a safe design, not a lock. Harry’s collection does include several safes however. Also there are numerous patented locks known to exist that are not in any of the collections mentioned. Every so often a new one turns up. Doug
