Right fellow safe buffs throughout the world, here is a challenge.

A friend of mine is seeking information, photo’s & written info on Lumby Safes, Halixax, UK
Do you have anything you can add.

Having searched the trade journals, I have a date of 1887, when Lumby was known as a wire manufacturer, not a safe maker. However in the few years that followed, they started making plate safes & cabinets. We have 2 models in our showroom!

We need you ‘boffins’ to help.

I would appreciate any info, pics & so on. Lets put Lumby on the map

Following a bit more research, i have pegged E Lumby-Halifax to an 1822 trade journal.

Lumby appeared to have started as a boiler maker in those early days. Perhaps any of you guys can elaborate?

In 1878 they were E Lumby and Son
In 1900 they were Lumby’s
At some time they were Lumby, Son and Wood Limited –probably later.
There were a lot of E Lumby’s in the world. They can’t all have been the same one.
In 1853 Edwin had a patent (2075) for needles or wires used in the manufacture of carpets.

Indeed, the E Lumby, boilermaker found in 1922, was at the same address as the E lumby 1878 notes. so one can only assume, without going into their family tree that they are one and the same company, pass down the family

My apologies, E Lumby was noted in a trade journal in 1822, not 1922.

Great advert from 1897.

I assume that Lumby may have started to make plate safes at a similar period. We have 2 in our showroom, one shows Gold & silver medals and the date 1900.

There may be an image of the plate in ‘plates & escucheons’

This was the same as I had. Circa 1885. & a nice piece. You need to clean her up with 3m cutter paste. It should bring the sheen up quite nicely. The plate n handle should polish up great too.

What’s its serial number (Painted in the jamb at the top viewed only when its door is open), if it starts with a lower than a 4, its closer to 1880.

the serial No. is 4333 and it is hard stamped on the top edge of the doors
it confirms it’s date as 1900 but i thought your date of 1885 was not that far out as this safe was from the board room of the old Sheffield Brick Co. the mineral clay extraction and machinery patent deed that were in it are dated 1867

do you know John Smith of C H WOODS LOCKSMITHS LTD he has an immense knowledge of safes and locks and CH Woods used to be part of the old Sheffield Brick Group as did i having worked for SMITH WIDDOWSON & EADEM for some 26 years

Indeed I do know John Smith. I got to know him when I worked at Aldridge Locksmith Wholesalers 1990-1993.
He had the old shop on Thornton Road-Bradford then.

Do you have any more info on Lumby safes to submit?
