Lock set from Wolverhampton

Here are some photos of one of only two locks in my collection (which is mainly made up of keys).

The maker is, I think, Young & Glover of Wolverhampton which can be seen on the key bow.

I found an advert from the manufacturer, the advert dates from 1884, apparently.

What puzzles me is the maker’s plate on the lock is from Young & Smith… :?

It may have been that Young and Smith made them while Young and Glover , being wholesalers, sold them. There could be two members of the same family in different companies at the time and so they used family connections to make product that was produced by one campany which they then sold as own branded through the wholesalers. Or the keys were by one company and the locks by another. Or most likely there was a very high incidence of partmners moving in, out and between firms and this could have been the changeover period when they were using up old keys on the new locks….
