Just btw, a victorian antiquary gave these locks the name ‘Cavalier Lock’, and it has stuck. There are probably about a score of them. The V&A has two, there is one in the Museum of London, another in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and several still in service. Most have the engraved verse with the word ’Master’s’, one has ‘Mistress’, and at least one isinnocent of the the verse altogether.
Although the figure is a Royalist, research by Peter Phillips [no relation] found the man is actually an infantry officer, so not technically a ‘cavalier’ — although the term ‘Cavalier’ is commonly applied to all royalist forces and supporters in general.
