Need Help, Sargent Warded Key

I have an older Sargent warded padlock and need a key for it. The alphanumeric number on the shackle is “5H65”. If anyone can post a picture of this key, would be awesome!

Although the shackle differs a little, I believe this is your padlock type and key. This comes from a 1922 Sargent reprint catalog. Hope this helps.

That’s not a warded key but rather a double bitted lever. From microfiche of old Reed Padlock Code Book, Vol. 2, Page S07:SARGENT 5H SERIES
For Sargent 1-¾″ bronze lever padlock #653-½
Sargent Blank #652-½, Ilco #992, Keil #44B
Depths are #1 = no cut, #2 = .025″, #3 = .050″
Drop the 5H and cut key from BOW to TIP
ILLUSTRATION: 5H16 would cut #16 =2313
65=1123

The book lists codes from 01 to 72 but for clarity I have only shown #65. Regrettably I don’t see any indication for the spacing or width of those cuts so I suspect there may have been “guide keys” associated with these old code books which I do not have. Perhaps someone else can determine how to cut this key from the above but I believe the information to be incomplete. All the key blanks noted are long obsolete.

I believe this was a misunderstanding then, finding the exact same key is highly unlikely. Finding a suitable key blank would be the right approach and then try to impression it and cut the key for it like Pete said.

I don’t think finding a key will be that hard…?? I have a 5H26 key and did a search on eBay and found a lock that had the same key… Maybe total coincidence…not sure. I don’t know a lot about vintage locks.

Here what the bottem of Sargent Padlock look like as it does take Flat key for it. Otherwise need to take picture of the keyway to see what inside look like. Could be wrong…Timothy….

Attached is an image of the “old” Ilco 992 key blank for your perusal showing substitutions from other manufacturers, note that all these keys are obsolete, also used on Yale.

Yep that looks like the one. Here are photos of a key that fits but doesn’t work.

If I was you the best thing to do first to impression a key by using a flat steel blank key. After got a working key, than compare the key you have to the key you impression just to see where the cut it. If some of the cut on your key match just a little bit from the flat steel key all you have to do it finish to made it work. The key you have that can’t be find anywhere as they are very hard to find and don’t made them anymore. I have been trying to find them for a long time. I do know Blue Dog carry them but they are very hard to deal with them…
