This is an extension key patented by James Deally of Louisville, Kentucky on May 29, 1860. The U.S. patent number is 28,457. A rim lock mounted on the inside of a thick door required a long key. This key was small enough to be carried in the pocket, but could be extended long enough to pass through the door and into the lock. Others solved this problem by making folding keys.
