I will add the first ones are 19C, the second ones early 20C. The largest of those might be for a full length cupboard door, like a room door, to a cupboard built into a solid wall of a house, and commonly called by the old name of ‘press’.
3rd from the left of the left keys has overlapping hook wards, which practically cannot be skeletoned - however this tends to make the key weak, so is only usually found on either small or very large keys.
Usually, the edge of the bit which enters the key first is the ‘front’ edge, and in Mr Klemm’s left pic can be seen a key fitting wheel wards on the backplate of the lock. The edge which goes in last is the ‘back’ edge, and cuts here are to pass wards on the cap of the lock. Locks may have wards on either or both backplate and cap.
The other edge is the ‘bottom’ edge. As shown in Mr Klemm’s right pic, square straight cuts here are usually to operate levers in a lever lock. With experience of handling locks and keys, you will come to recognise the rather few keys which have wards cuts on the bottom edge. The most common are 2-sided locks with a bridge ward, which has most of its ward cuts in the middle of the bit. This one has fine wards - like the wards in Mr Klemm’s left pic, they are made of sheet metal. There are also solid wards, which are cast, or a solid plug which is machined by a shaped cutter.
