Found a wierd key in goldmine country

Can anyone identify the key shown in my attachment.

It is (aged) brass with the name “ BOTON” cast imprint on the rounded key tumbler side- the other side is flat… ( i.e the key point is rounded). My friend thot perhaps it is a lockbox key. buried treasure???

That is a baton key. An import knockoff of the Abloy rotating disc lock. Probably used in a vending application and not particularly old or un-common. See website here:BatonLockUSA.com

I use to have a Minelab GP. But I traded it out for a pair of Whites, one treasure and one prospector. I prefer them and they seem to be able to get almost the same depth as my old GP but they are able to tell me what I am going after. As I get older this is becoming more important. Aluminum isn’t something I will go after. They are always making improvements. I haven’t yet found a lock with them.

They really come down to three types. General that picks up EVERYTHING. Classifiers that will tell you what your after. Prospectors that are tuned a bit to pick up gold and silver most of the time and not iron. I prefer the classifiers in that they tell you what your target is and how deep it is. It will also tell you if you have two targets but they haven’t got to good at telling you what the depth of both are really. Pop cans really play hell with metal detectors in that they scream loud as a target but are not really worth going after. In the end you have to decide what your after and buy the detector you need. This is the reason I have two. I hunt gold and I hunt coin/other targets. If I was to only have one detector I would go after the treasure made by Whites. They do work better if they are made to target something.

If you watch the TV series Meteor Men, they tend to use the Fisher F75 a lot. Very expensive, though. Is it worth it? I have no idea.
