Hello everyone, first time poster.

I have been collecting old keys as a hobby since my Grandfather gave me a skeleton key many years ago.

I recently logged on to a popular Internet auction site to discover the selling prices of old keys has skyrocketed.

Is there a reason for this? Are people collecting more now days, or is there some other reason for the crazy prices being paid for old keys? Are people doing other things with the keys? The mystery is very interesting!

I would think that it might be the key in question more than just any key. Some keys that have sold in recent time might have been rare one of a kind keys or pototype keys and locks. If there is a history put to a key it is worth more than just a key. So knowing what a key fit and/or what it was used for can change a price to the higher levels in a hurry. But that is only if the collectors know what it is REALLY worth to them.

Is there an Internet or book source for dating and identifying keys? I do have a copy of Monk’s book but it’s quite limited.

If you are interested in learning more about lock and key values I suggest going to one of the several lock and key shows around the country. The guys that go are a wealth of knowledge, honestly. There is a show in Lancaster, PA coming up on July 17th. You should consider coming. Also there is a man by the name of Richard Chenovick that sells great books on locks and keys. I’m not collecting keys but am looking for a flat double bitted key for my 1870 Star Lock Works lever brass padlock, crab style. Could you tell me what internet web site you found for key auctions? Would love to find an original or just one that would open my lock. Just got started in this so have no idea about prices but hope they don’t get too high or my future collection will be very small. There are both ethical and unethical dealors as in every endevor.
Some high priced keys are set as a fantasy price for the unwary collector.
Return on investment is a very difficult question and depends on each specific
piece of hardware you are looking at.

I collect for pleasure not the profit, although the best people who
know where the profits are to be found are the dedicated collectors.
