narrowing down the date

this is the corbin lock that was on the bathroom door when we moved into a house in 1967. when I sold it in 2008 I took it with me. I know the patent date from the back but was jus wondering when it was sold or should I jus be happy with that lol. thanks all

As the patent date would indicate, probably late 19th or early 20th century?

i got this lock last year at a local festival. there is no name on the outside. it looks a lot like my corbin. I decided to clean and oil it. on the inside of the base I found a patend because of the rust and buildup I can make out most of it. pat jan 23 1886. problem is depending on the light and how you hold it the 86 can look like 66. any info on the lock or suggestions on how to better see the date. thanks

Locks and Lockmakers of America, Rev. Third Edition by Thomas F. Hennessy lists two lock patents issued 1/23/1866:

52,183; M. McGonnigle; Allegheny, PA
52,226; C. Toll; Boston, MA

When I checked Google, the first is for Linoleum floor covering and the second a Display-card. There is thus a discrepancy between Mr. Hennessy’s data and The Official Gazette of the US Patent Office!

thanks for all the help. I looked up the patent 52201. the insides are not the same as the one I have. close tho. maybe I’m not reading the 23 right. I tried doing a search but having trouble figuring out the search. I used the patent # search on the website http://www.uspto.gov/
still hard to believe that this lock may be that old. I’ll keep trying.

I did find images of the “lock” patents cited by Mr. Hennessy but they are not what the inquirer was seeking.

ok. looking at pat. 52201, the part marked F is exact to the same part in my lock. are those parts specific to that manufacturer or are those parts generic. if so can I look up that manufacturer and maybe find my lock. patent says F. B. Pye.

ok heres what im thinking. after looking at pat. 52201 a lot of the parts match my lock. the patent itself is for the reversible latch. mine has the same latch so is the pat. date for the latch used?

Just a small general point. Production products often do not follow exactly the design shown in a patent; and often change slightly over time, with production experience.
