Hello, help identifying Safe Co. Name, Starts with RE????

Hello,
This is a great group you have! I would like to introduce myself to the group, My name is Joe Bruce and I am from the Detroit area, I collect and deal in Antique 18Th & 19th C. English , French and Russian Silver and dabble in other antiques as well. I find a lot of great stuff in my town of Grosse Pointe, Mi , it is a town originally settled by the French then at the turn of the last Century , became a get-a-way for the rich auto barons, Each outdoing the other in building wonderful estates along the shores of Lake Saint Clair! Now even though (because of developers) a lot of the original mansions are gone and the land subdivided to suit modern day families, there are still many wonderful old estates left to find treasures that have been tucked away for many years and rediscovered when the owners pass away or move. I recently found a safe in the basement of a WWII German soldiers house , I would like to know if anyone can help me identify the maker of the safe? It is 39″ tall x 27″ wide and has no combination , just a keyhole in the center of the door (I have the Key)It has a wood interior, is on large casters with decorative iron covers and the front is marked: RE????? & Company Safes. Any guesses? The letters after RE are faded. Thanks! Sorry for being so lengthy!

Hi Joe, welcome.

Your safe is definetly American. Only the Americans put wheels on their safes! (apart from the Japanese and Chinese who sell most of their product to America). Us Brits…now, we like to bolt our valuables down. No casters just a hole in the bottom for a BIG bolt into the concrete.

You need a US safe expert.

Here’s a question…why would anyone paint SAFES in big letters on the side of a safe? Perhaps it was a salesams sample and he pushed it around the streets - no, maybe not.

Any chance of a picture of the key ?

I am guessing Yale Quadruplex, which were also made by a company called ‘ Bacon ’

Yes it is a ‘ Quadruplex lock ’ the lock was patented by Yales on June 12 1844, and the rights sold the Bacon soon thereafter, they made the locks and their own safes, so maybe it is a ‘ Bacon ’ ?

Either way the lock itself is a collectors piece ..
