That spring DOES have to do with the detenting of the buttons, it rides along the thick part of the casting of the lower button. the spring should have 3 distinct contact points (shiny or polished looking) where it came in contact with the button (long shiny contact patch) and the lock body itself (2 small shiny contact patches, nearly opposite each other). Fitting it back in would be like inserting a puzzle piece - it would ONLY fit ONE way and it’s the ONLY piece that would fit in that certain place. These "shiny contact patches I speak of are known in the trade as "witness marks’ as they give testimony as to HOW, WHERE, WHY a part goes where it is supposed to go and do what it’s supposed to do. If you bring your lock back to whoever worked on it, feel free to print my comment out and show it to him/her as deciphering “witness marks” is something learned early on in working on locks professionally [shakes head in disamazement].
