Avon (Bramah?) government lock

I recently acquired this lock and have identified it as an Avon lock used by HM Government, primarily in military applications. However it is commercially available (but information is scarce).

I appears to have a Bramah type keyway and barrel, but I can only see 6 pins (that look like springs?). There is reference on the Bramah UK price list to an Avon lock so this does seem to fit.

Not so far, only the cover was off as it would have had to be removed to undo the bolts securing the unit to the door. But not much more to be seen under the cover - it’s a very solid, enclosed unit.

Probably weighs a couple of kilos!

Will get comprehensive pictures when I do get round to dismantling it.

It will probably be found to have 7 sliders, and probably dates from 198- onwards.

Al, the majority of the Avon’s were fitted with a specially modified variation which Bramah denoted an MD27X. Keys as standard were about 5 inches long and the barrels and the ends of the keys were different to normal production. Try a standard MD27 key and you might find it won’t press into the barrel fully.

Some were used by the PO though, and were fitted with standard MD27s with the extended length keys. I think I had an old MD27X set knocking around somewhere- I’ll post up pics if i can find them. They are amazing locks but needed careful use and regular cleaning- most never got either on the MoD bases that employed them!

these locks where/ are fitted to armoury doors nearly got myself one from ebay only the price stopped me
