Over on History of Locks there has been a discussion of safe/vault locks that are X-Ray proof (or should we say “resistant”) and I thought I’d drag it over here where there seem to be more members, who might be able to comment.
Brian Morland noted that Chubb was working on the issue in the late 1950s but a famous KGB incident at Orly airport was in 1962/1963. He asked if there was some prior indident that stimulated the 1950s work.
A followup listed US patents for X-ray resistance. For locks, these were in the 1958-1963 timeframe, and all by S&G.
A question was asked, how do you actually mount an x-ray attack? An active source behind a safe? A passive (radioactive) source inside? Film or flouroscope in front? It seems difficult but apparently was done at least once.
