S & G Vault Clocks

Hello

Have had these 2 clocks for several years.

Both are stamped # 2.

Case #'s are 396 & 728.

Both are in excellant working order.

Have not had the oppurtunity to purchase the mentioned book on these types of clocks.

Would anyone be able to furnish an approximate date that these were manufactured ?

The book, American Genius, is very good; try to find a copy. S&G made the Model 2 for over 50 years. Your appears to be the Model 2[12] which was introduced in 1889 (based on the 72-hour movements which are labeled through 72) and was in production for 7 years. This is based on the book, not personal expertise.

The funny thing is that the second picture has the leaf and vine engraving on the plate behind the dials and that was supposed to be stopped with the model 2 (4) in the 1870’s. Also on the cello bolt, the bolt is not actually engraved but has a nickel plate screwed to it that is engraved. This may be a factory reworked clock that was initially a much older piece that was updated for a customer as longer lockout periods became standard. It could also just be a piece that was cobbled together by an interested clockmaker. Who knows. To have a better idea you would probably have to remove the mechanism and count the jewels and see what type of stops the clocks have.

Good point, the movements are not always a reliable indicator of the age of the rest of the time lock since they could have been replaced with newer or older movements (or even movements made by a different company). IIRC S&G was incorporated in 1896 and the enamel dials were updated to include the company name, so that sort of narrows the age of the movements. Looking at American Genius it does appear this is at least a later case/lock if not exactly a model 2[12] but not all models are shown.

Your observations are very keen.

Mark F. also had similar points of interest.

I had cleaned these clocks a few years back, placing the engraved plate movement, into the other case, for decoratorative purposes.

Based on the now obvious findings, the movements shall be replaced as found.

Case # 396 has movement # 792

Case # 728 Has movement # 409

When found, # 409 was inside # 396.

These originated from the Bank Of New York.

I recall then, seeing very faint scribed #'s, & initials of BONY , on most parts.
