French Combination Lock.

Following up on the thread “4 dial lock” I thought that I would share images of a Alphabet dial lock removed from a French safe.
Each of the dials contain a full A-Z English alphabet, with the exception of letter ‘W’ and the settings are fully changeable. This lock mechanism,or very similar,is illustrated in a French Dictionary of 1868. Hope you can read the lingo!

Thanks for posting those pictures. It is essentially the same lock but with a few differences in the layout. I noticed that both locks do not have a “W” on the dials. Any clue as to the maker? Doug

I know where there is a safe with that same locking system it is a Petitjean form Paris.

Was one of these 1844 locks sold last year on Schofield auction website? Was it the lock on the front cover. For your information this lock was pick by Hobbs on at least one occasion leading to the introduction of the false gates on “b” and “g”.

Also I think sector lever l was there as the bolt had no internal support only the case of the lock. I’d like to see an example of this lock if anyone has one. I can’t find the picture of Schofields auction catalogue if anyone has one. It could be a missing link in Newell’s lock.
