S&G Time Lock

This is a recent acquisition, although a fairly modern lock (post war) its not one I recall seeing before. It has 144 hr swiss movementsthat I’m assuming are original. I know it’snot special but it does have an appeal!

…..and at the other end of the scale is this one. No. 4 with a case numberof 1197. Its pre 1900, I dont know the exact date, perhaps some one can help me out. Its in a very nice condition inside and out. Notice the Geneva wheel clearly visable.

Nice to find one of these oldies on the forums. The Model 4 was the most successful of S&G’s timelocks and was first seen on the market in 1878 and was produced through the 1950s. You can count yourself really luckey to have one of these since there are about 200 left in the world.

Id say this piece is from the late 1880s or the beginning of the 1900s. If you want more precise dating, please take a more detailed photo of the dial in the lower right coner and upload it! It would be real fun to see. And again, congrats to the ownership of this lock.

I was looking for a detail that should be on the dial but have been where the patent was engraved, but i cant find it. Also the dials on your lock looks similar to those created in the late 1880s, so im guessing thats when ur locks from aswell.

Is the case of the first lock you posted openable? Are there any details on the outside worth mentioning?

Unlike the No4, the late S&G locks are set and operated without opening the door. The front can be removed by undoing the 4 allen screws after first removing the knob. This lock must have had a short life as few people I’ve spoken to have seen it before. The safe contents may have caused problems, under certain circumstances, with the knob projecting the way that it does.
