Obituary: Celebrating the Life of David James Key
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a true pillar of our trade and a cherished member of the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), David James Key.
David’s dedication to the craft of locksmithing was nothing short of legendary. He was a proud and devoted member of the MLA for 53 long years, a monumental milestone that was officially celebrated in December 2023 when he was honored with his 50-year membership certificate. For David, being a part of the MLA for over half a century was one of his proudest and greatest achievements.
A Passion for the Craft and History
Beyond his professional skill, David was a master historian of the trade. He was an avid, lifelong collector of antique locks and served with distinction as a Past President of the Lock Collectors Association.
His dedication to preserving history was unmatched. David spent countless hours in his workshop fixing, mending, polishing, and perfecting his incredible collection. He was a man of immense knowledge, frequently giving captivating lectures on ancient and antique lock designs throughout the ages. His passion was kept alive through detailed technical drawings and the endless, fascinating stories he loved to share.
A Family Legacy
The MLA expos, weekenders, and meetings were the absolute highlights of David’s calendar. He rarely attended them alone; he loved sharing these events with his beloved wife, Rosemary, alongside his son and grandson—the other two Davids—creating a beautiful, multi-generational bond centered around the trade he loved.
David’s warmth, unparalleled knowledge, and dedication to the MLA will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We extend our deepest condolences to David, Diddy , and the entirety of his family. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through the stories he told, the knowledge he shared, and the history he preserved.
